Re: locating fpoc prior to 1850

Hi Kim,

Have you looked at each year of the personal property tax lists for Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia? These tax lists are microfilmed for the years 1782 through 1850 (except 1808) for Hampshire, Hardy and Frederick Counties. The Frederick Co. microfilms are available at the Handley Library in Winchester. And I have the Hardy, Hampshire and Shenandoah lists on permanent loan at the Family History Center at the Mormon church in Winchester. In Hardy and Hampshire counties the fpc list is at the end of each tax district. In some years the fpc lists contain the names of every person in the household and their occupations. Presence and absence in the personal property tax lists can give you clues about the timing of their movements in and out of the counties.

Hope this helps,
Jane Ailes
