Rockingham Co. VA Free Negro LIst 1839

One of the themes of the articles that appear in the current issue of the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy published by the VA Genealogy Society (Vol. 44 No. 4) November 2006 is "Records Where You Least Expect to Find Them"....related to the theme is the article "A List of Free Negroes, Rockingham County, Virginia 1849, by Dorothy Boyd-Bragg, Ph.D.

The list was found at the Rockingham Courthouse, "inserted between pages 60 and 61 of the Land Tax Book of Rockingham County for 1849. It is inserted within the section entitled "List of Taxable Property Within the District of Joseph Burkholder, Commissioner of the Revenue for Rockingham County."

These lists are different from the Free Negro Registers which VA counties were required to keep after 1793 (not all did, those that did not all survived, some kept info the county court order books)
These Lists are different from the Registers and were compiled based on the the law passed in 1801 "requiring the Commissioners of the Revenue annually to return a complete list of all free Negroes within their districts, with their names, sex, place of abode and trades; a copy of the list shall be fixed to the courthouse door" (Black Laws of Virginia).

This list includes 158 entries, giving names and Residence. Will check for name if anyone is interested. The first 2 entries are for REDMAN's, wasn't someone looking for REDMAN.

Sally REDMAN - Sheandoah River
Wm and Benj. F. Redman - ditto,

Selma
