I have transcripts of certificates of freedom (Winchester, VA) for some ancestors that list them as being born free. I have checked the personal property tax lists and can locate one of them in 1946 residing in Hampshire County, VA. He shows up on the 1940 Hampshire Co. census. It's been a dead end with the others. Any suggestions???
