I'm researching the Goens/Goins/Goings line from Moore and Person Counties, North Carolina. Most of my information comes from Cherokee Application files. A William "Billy" Goen is the progenitor of my wife's line born circa 1755.

While reading "The Negro in the Making of America" by Benjamin Quarles, there was a very brief reference to a "William Goins" in Texas that new the "Cherokee language" and was quite known. The reference is very brief however, I believe it is refering the the mid 1800's; 1845-1860.
