When I first started putting together books on African American Genealogy in Orange County, NY, I was pleased to find over 100 Civil
War Veterans. My hope was to find a connection back to a revolutionary war soldier. After five years I have come up with five different Revolutionary War soldiers. I would like to relate the story of one. In the 1850 census in Monroe, NY, there was a black woman aged 90 who was collecting a pension. Her name was Abigail Peterson. I traced her family and found her husband Benjamin to be a Revolutionary War soldier. After finding his pension application and service record I realized that no where does it mention his color. He was in service in New Jersey and fought in the Battle of Monmouth.
He has many descendants who could join the DAR if they were inclined
to do so.
