If you haven't already done so, you might want to take a look at the extensive amount of research collected in the Pangburn letters - which are online (a collection of Pangburn genealogy in newsletter format).

There are quite a few mentions of white Pangburns from NY - some from Montgomery county. This could lead you to some clues from the 1600- 1800 period.
