Re: Redman UGRR connections
![]() In Response To: Redman/Warrick of Loudoun Co., VA ()
I am searching for any possible links between UGRR operators John and Jesse Redman, in Ross County, Ohio and Pennsylvania or Virginia (West Virginia) Redmans. Here is what I have found out so far: The following passage is from Andrew J. Waychoff, Local History of Greene County and Southwestern Pennsylvania, 1975, p. 85. Waychoff wrote
The "family named Redmond" is the object of my research, and could be the Barnet Redman family, a large African American family headed by Barnet Redman, age 58, mulatto, born in Virginia, and Elenor, age 50, mulatto, born in Virginia." In 1850, this family is not living "above Holbrook," but about ten miles away in a neighboring township. Of course they could have relocated after the 1850 census, but only the youngest children show up in the 1860 census, and then in the same location. Additionally, a Barnet Redman was married to a Stacy Lett (both colored) by Rev. William Welch, in Hampshire County, Virginia, on 4 September 1823. I have no positive identification to link this to the Greene County Barnet Redman, but the time and geography favor a possible match.
