Re: Petersburg Emancipated Slaves...
In Response To: Re: Petersburg Emancipated Slaves... ()
Although I have not found a Peters with the name you mentioned, I do have information concerning some of the freeborn Peters who resided in the Richmond-Henrico County Va. area before, during and after the 1842 date of your gg grandfather's birth. The ones in my line sometimes used the surname "Vandervall" since some of their members were indentured to this family (Ann Gunn Vandervall) in the mid to late 1700s.
In addition, I have strong circumstantial evidence that one Rachel Peters later maintained a "left-handed" marriage with Ann's son Daniel in the now historic Jackson Ward section of Richmond. Their three children (Nelson Sr., Sarah and Leroy) used both surnames and eventually and rightfully used Vandervall exclusively when it became a choice they could make themselves. This generation was born perhaps in late 1700s to early 1800s.
If you desire further information, please contact me. There is much more, but it would be far easier for me to mail it. Perhaps you can help me solve some mysteries or connect some missing pieces of the puzzle.
