Re: John Shivers(Chavis?) of Opelousas

Cuban Papers (Papeles Procedentes de Cuba or Legajos) (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida)

The Cuban Papers or Legajos are a collection of documents generated by the Spanish government for the Mississippi Valley, Gulf Coast and East/West Florida. It is the only Spanish American colonial archive removed to Spain in its entirety. The collection contains government documents created during the Spanish rule along the Gulf Coast, from about the 1730's on up into the turn of the century. The majority of the documents are for the time period from 1761 to 1805. The documents show official government dealings with the day to day issues of life, some census, marriages, birth, death records, can be found. There are documents written in English and French but the majority of the documents are in Spanish.( You can also check out these records at the Clayton Genealogical center in Houston, Texas, which is where I live)
