Has anyone worked with the free black tax lists in Virgina? I'm trying to make sense out of them. These are not the same as the personal and land property tax records. These are rather those lists of free blacks that were compiled by the Commissioner of the Revenue to help identify free blacks for tax and other purposes. Lists survive from the 30's-50's in various cities and counties. Has anyone used them or analyzed them or know a researcher/scholar who has used them?
