I've done extensive research on some African American/free family of color in Clinton County, Illinois from 1820 to 1880. The Mayhew, Curtis, Pendergrass, Killion and Hickman families were related by blood and marriage.
In 1871 a small group left Clinton County, and migrated to Bourbon County, Kansas (Fort Scott)--Reverend Henry Mayhew, his brother James Mayhew(Civil War veteran) and several of their immediate and extended family members.
Researching information on post 1880 descendants of these families.
Historically and currently these families have identified with European, African American and Native American.
