Possible name changed?

I am just beside myself!

I have been researching the huge Thomas family in Phillips County, Arkansas. I'd stopped for a while and was rearching other family members.
Well, as I have been told and found to be true, this family has been in Arkansas since before the 1830s. My grandfather and his father were both named John Thomas. His father married Julia Henderson, daughter of Luke and Fannie Henderson.
Yesterday I was looking at the census for 1870 (trying to make sure that the Hendersons were indeed in Arkansas during that time) when I happened to glance at the names on the same page. Three houses down from the Hendersons are:

Edward Rabb Husband
Lovina Rabb wife
Ned Rabb son
Charles Rabb son
John Rabb Son
That would not have bothered me so much but that in 1880 I had found

Ned Thomas husband
Luvinia Thomas wife
Ned Jr son
Charles son
John son
Ben Rose other

These are my ancestors but they are the exact ages that the Rabbs would be 10 years later.I know that many ex-slaves changed their names after slavery and am wondering if this is what truely happened. Does anyone else get the feeling that the Rabbs and the
Thomases are the same people? What is the full name for Ned? Is Ed close to being Ned?
I need to search for the slaveowner in that area named Rabb. If this is true then the person that we have been told all these years was the slavemaster isn't true.
