I've read a lot on the Chavis clan. From what I have read they appear to be of multi-racial origins(Native, Black, and White) and that they were free during the colonial period in the former British colonies. Most of them spread to SC AND NC from Virginia. But some made it to Louisiana and married into some of my free people of color ancestors(LaChapelle,Gradenigo) in St. Landry Parish. Also, from what I have read, they are all related.
