Glad to see that the Stephen Tate in our post was you g-g-grandfather. You've done a great job of researching the family from him forward.
Since he was born in 1834 I looked at Woodson's Negro Head of Households in the 1830 Census. There are many (abt 35) Tate's listed as FPOC, most of them in VA. I didn't see any in either Bedford or Franklin county, but there was a 'bunch' located in Westmoreland County. I also looked for Holland's, again quite a few in VA.
