In the 1782 Hampshire Co., VA personal property tax lists (PPTL) there are George and Edward Fidler listed (tithables are not differeniated by skin color until 1801 so these men are listed with the white tithables). To be listed in the PPTL in 1782, they had to be over 21 years old. [Part of Hampshire Co., VA became Hardy Co., VA in 1786] The Edward Fidler you are talking about as marrying in 1850, could not be the same as the man who is 21 years old in 1782. However, that doesn't mean he's not a possible descendent of the Hampshire/Hardy Co., Virginia Fidlers. Looking quickly at the census records, it appears that the last year any Fidlers are present in Hampshire/Hardy Cos. is 1820. I haven't studied them all the way through the personal property tax lists to see what year they actually disappear or to garner all the Fidler names. I also do not know where they came from before Hampshire/Hardy Co.
