Re: TATE FPOC VA
In Response To: Re: TATE FPOC VA ()
Stephen Tate is indeed my Great-Great grandfather.
His daughter Laura Tate White was my Great-Grandmother, Alta White Martin's, my grandmother's mother. My Great-Aunt, Lillie Tate Lee, also raised me until she died at 90 in 1960 when I was seven.
Here lies the dilemna.
Stephen, with the surname Tate, appears as a slave of Thomas Holland in a 1851 inventory with Mimia and her children Eliza and Emma. First, I had heard of Eliza, therefore she must have died early on. Emma, I can trace forward.
Given the fact that Stephen also shows as a skilled person-- Blacksmith and also with a surname raises questions for me.
He is the only slave listed with a surname on the entire list. Great Aunt Lillie always said her father was a free man on color. However, he appears on the list with the other slaves. He is valued at $1,100, worth hundreds more than any others listed. The presence of a surname, could indicate that he took a surname from previous owner or as I suspect married the slave Mimia and gave up his freedom. Don't ask why I think this, just intuition, I cannot document it--yet!
What I am trying to determine is if anyone has seen Stephen Tate listed with other FPOC Tates in VA. There is a line of FPOC Tate from VA.
In addition, Stephen also appears to be very wealthy, comparatively, to other Blacks in his time period. He is listed in the 1870 Franklin County Business Directory via a paid advertisement. I also know that he owned more than 1,500 acres of land that was passed on to my Grandmother Alta. He sent his daughters to college, thus beginning a long line of school teachers and college-educated folks in my maternal line.
He registered immediately after the Civil War, as a Republican (Abrahams Lincoln's Party), thus beginning a long line of Republicans in my family that did not cross over to the Democratic Party until a few defected for Roosevelt's last election and more recently registered as Democratic in the Kennedy-Nixon election. Many remain Republican until this day, though most, have voted the Democratic ticket for years.
He was so influenced by what he though Lincoln stood for, that I grew up with his bust of Lincoln and also of Frederick Douglass on our mantle piece. I am told that the Lincoln bust belonged to Stephen Tate.
I am struck how G-G-Grandfather Stephen accquired so much wealth immediately after the Civil War.
I also found the only other AA Blacksmith in the Franklin County to be King Tate, though records indicate he was 30 years older than Stephen, that he is not Stephen's father, but a relative.
All of these AA Tates were considerably well-off.
I am simply trying to unravel this confusion. The Tate's were orginally in Bedford County, VA but most that part of Bedford was annexed to from Franklin County and that is where my Tates hail. Did the Tates come there from northwestern VA counties that contained FPOC Tates or where they always slaves?
Interestingly, I can not find one single male TATE descendant from that line. Perhaps, Banks son of Stephen did not father children or live to adulthood. There is also a son Carson that seems to disappear. Also, there appear to be Tate relatives nearby with male children and their lines have vanished also.
Most frustrating is that I cannot find one single AA Tate in Franklin or neigbroing counties. I can account for nearly all of the offspring of the female siblings and their lines to date.
So, I have shared all of this to cast the net far and wide. I want to find my Tates.
Calling all AA Tates to share their lineage, please.
Your posting has caused me to share more information. I am hoping this is just the breakthrough that I need.
Blessings and favor, Alta.
