Isaac CLIFFORD (c. 1796 - 1831), Hardy County, VA

Isaac Clifford was a free person of color whose marriage to Judy LEWIS in 1796 is on record at the Hardy County courthouse in Moorefield, WV. Although Isaac and family were in MD in the 1800 Census, his lines were primarily in VA, WV, OH, & PA. Related families: BRUCE, FRANKLIN, KENT, LETT, LOWRY, PECK, REDMAN, SCOTT, SMITH, STEWART, TATE, TURNEY, WARRICK.

Descendants of the CLIFFORD family of Hardy County, VA will gather for the Kent-Clifford Family Reunion August 18-20, 2006. Starting August 16, 2006 there will be events commemorating the 100th annivesary of the meeting of the Niagara Movement in Harpers Ferry, WV.

John Robert Clifford, a lawyer and the editor of the Pioneer Press, is a descendant of the Hardy County Cliffords. He was prominent in the events held at Storer College in 1906 and will be the subject of several lectures.

The women of the Niagara Movement including Carrie Williams Clifford will also be discussed. Carrie's husband, William Henry Clifford, Jr. was the son of William Henry Clifford, Sr. who was listed in the 1850 Census as the barkeeper for the Mullin Hotel in Moorefield, VA (now WV).
