His mother may have been a slave named Myrtilla owned by the Harlestons. Richard P. may have been given as a gift by Elizabeth Harleston (1747-1830) to her neice, Mrs Harleston Corbett Simons (Mrs James Dewar Simons). FYI, the black Harlestons that are featured in Edward Ball's recent book, THE SWEET HELL INSIDE, I believe are a separate
