It would be helpful if you told us what you had found so far. Have you located them in the 1870 to 1900's census'. If you did find them in those census records "what state and COUNTY were they located in", "how old were they", who else was in the household. For many the first hint that the family or individuals they are researching were "free blacks", is that these individuals are identified by NAME in the 1860 (and back) census records. And then you must determine how they became free, either by birth, Will or Deed. Those individuals that were Enslaved are not identified by NAME on US Census records prior to 1870. I believe that I answered an earlier posting of yours regarding Henry County VA. Is this where this family is located? Selma
