After reading your post, I realize that I have a lot more to learn about this research process. Thank you so much for helping to point me in the right direction. I did have a few questions regarding your response.

My first question is, is a guide to Free African American and Slave Records a reference book at the library of Virginia and can it be accessed online?

Another question is, do you know if the free negro lists are divided by county or if all free negroes of Virginia are listed together?

My last question is are the Black Laws of Virginia and the Free Negro in Virginia books?
