Re: Dickens/Dickins/Deacons - Simpson in PA
In Response To: Dickens/Dickins/Deacons - Simpson in PA ()
Robin & Linda: I don't know whether this will be of help to you but here is what I know. Redstone was once what they called Brownsville and some surrounding areas in Fayette County, PA. This should not to be mistaken for West Brownsville, PA, in Washington County, nearby. In a book authored by Wayne L. Snyder, Guernsey County's Black Pioneers and Patroits, and Persons, he writes about the Dickens, Ernestine Betts; Hattie, Helen, John, Jonah, and Lewis Dickens. Also, Jerry (Pete) Simpson, brother of Edith Lucas, wife, of James Lucas. Snyder has made reference to William G. Wolfe's book, "Stories by Guernsey County, Ohio, published in 1943." There is a picture of the log cabin home on Four Mile Hill of Harrie (Mrs. John Dicken; her grandson Louis Dickens, who later married Ernestine Betts and serviced as paymaster of the Suite Manufacturing Company; and her daughter Helen Dickens (Mrs.Ralph O'Neal). All are deceased. Jonah Dickens and Ned Simpson were early settlers east of the Four Mile Hill and worked as hostlers at Endley's tavern. Jerry (Pete) Simpson , his sister, Edith and her husband, James Lucas migrated from Redstone [or Brownsville], PA to Oxford Township, Guernsey County and settled in the area called Fairview. Black folk passing through Zane's Trace [now Zanesville] and the National Road [old Route 40 running parrell to Highway 70] stopped at the Lucas home for food and lodging. Mrs. Lucas gained a reputation as a fortune teller; many came from great distances to consult her at the The Black Horse Tavern. Sources for Resource: Might be The Finlay Room of the Buernesey County District Public Library in Cambridge [this is a great place where the librarian is very helpful and knows people in the area.] and the Uniontown Public Library where I'm told has many of the old records for Brownsville, PA. Both have online web sites. My interest in these area include: Betts; Lucas; Hilton; Cox; and Jones families.
