Re: Goins' in Virginia ( West Virginia)

Hello Robert,

The 1850 Ohio Census record 'should' have an entry
in column 7 for Color.

It has been my experience researching Ohio Census records that in some counties, especially in the 1850's, there were very few AA's and to prevent entry after entry of (W)the enumerator simply left Column 7 blank and only made an entry when they had a (B) or an (M). The lack of a (B) or (M) makes the assumption that family listed was white and this has caused me a 'headache' at times.

Just a thought as to why no distinction as to Race on your particular records. Add to that all the various spellings and I've seen Goins' as Black, Mulatto, Indian & white in many, many Ohio
Census records coming out of VA & WV.
