Ihave a problem. I found out that my paternal great great grandmother-clara rapp was living as a free woman in 1860. she is listed in the 1860 us census records as head of house hold for algiers louisiana.She and her 3 children at the time. Algiers is a city in Orleans county/parish.

How can i find out if she was living as a free woman in 1850 or in the prior years before 1860. At least i do know that she was living as a free woman prior to the civil war withher 3 kids.
