I have spent several years (but still a novice) researching my family history in the Southestern VA region. Mainly Nansemond and Southampton Co. I have come to a brick wall with John Crocker born free SH County about 1785. My three assumptions are that he is #1 a descendent of the Nottoway Indians #2 A descendent of Molly Cocharon of Goochland (probable Nottoway) or #3 a descendant of the intermarriage of Sara Crocker( a white woman ) and Isham (Thomas) Tann (a mullato). I say that these are assumptions but I have small threads of evidence that any one of these could be true. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have have suggestions for researching this era and location for FPOC?
