I just came across this thread that is dated from 2004. I read with interest the information concerning Thornton Alexander and about his 'slave master' having been "A. Sellers" from Rockingham County, Virginia. My interest is because "A. Sellers" was Adam Sellers, my 5 Great Grandfather, and he did indeed move from Rockingham County, Virginia, to Warren County, Ohio, in 1817. Prior to purchasing 206 acres from George Harnsberger and settling near several of his children in Warren County, Adam did free his slaves in Darke County. I have a typed copy of a letter written in 1887 by Adam's grandson, who was also named Adam Sellers, that details the journey from Rockingham County, VA, to Darke County, OH, and on to Warren County, OH, and confirms grandfather Adam's freeing of his slaves.
What also interests me besides knowing the identity of Thorton Alexander and his subsequent family is the mention of James Clemens' wife, Sophia, as being a Sellers and as a possible daughter of Adam Sellers'. I have been in contact with James and Sophia Clemens 5th Great Granddaughter, and together we have been trying to figure out whether Sophia was actually Adam's daughter or whether she simply took the surname of Sellers once she, too, was freed.
Adam Sellers was 75 years old in 1817 when he took his slaves to Darke County, Ohio. Though its certainly possible that Sophia was his daughter, I have yet to find any definitive proof one way or the other. All I have uncovered is that Sophia supposedly had the surname of "Sellers", but that is hardly enough of a basis upon which to draw any conclusions.
I know this thread is somewhat dated, but I thought I would take a chance and reply to it in hopes it does reach someone with interest, knowledge, and/or information about the above. I'm also interested in learning as much as possible about all of these ancestors.
