Abstract: Free persons of color Leanty, age about forty-six, and her two children, Mary and Henry, ask to remain in Virginia. They had been freed and given property by their late owner Richard Smith, who made arrangements with his executor to petition the legislature for them to remain in the state. If denied residency, they were at liberty to choose new masters among Smith's blood relatives.
