My Chavis ancestors lived in Warren,Jefferson and Copiah County, MS in 1859. It appears that most of the men migrated to other states about that time. I believe one of my relatives was allowed to stay because his neighbors came to his aid and told that he had fought in the War of 1812.

My question is was there an effort to eject people of color from the state of MS around 1859-60??
