Hi,
Am doing research for a friend, named Candece whose family appears on the 1850 census of Craven county NC, surnamed GEORGE. She has the section from Paul's book on the George family, New Berne - but needs to know where to go to make connections to the earlier George's listed by Paul and the family found free in 1850.
Mis-spelled in the index (her name was Betsy:
Name: Bessy George
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1815
Birth place: North Carolina
Race: Black
Gender: Female
Home in 1850
(City,County,State): New Berne, Craven, North Carolina
she is listed with children:
Martha 20
Emeline 14
Francis 12
John 9 ( my friends gr gr grandfather)
Decy 10
Since NC is not my area of research, I don't know where to point her towards docs for New Berne. Was there a register of Free Negros? Are birth records available? Checked the Craven county GenWeb site but didn't find much info there.
Did find apprentice bonds on the local library site and George marriages on ancestry. She should be posting here soon.
Thanks,
Denise
