I'm not sure where to begin, but this site seems to be the best fit I've come across. I am searching for my gggg/f living in Granville Cty, NC during the early to mid 1850's. If my theory is correct his surname was Chapman and his legal classification would have been Free Person of Color (actually a tri-racial isolate known as Melungeon). Because there was no marriage between he and my gggg/m, I have no other information. I strongly suspect that they did not marry because of anti-miscegenation laws of the day and place. They did have atleast 2 children, likely more over a period of years.
I know that there were other "melungeons" in the Flat River area of Granville/Orange County.
