Subject: Introduction, links for FPOC in NC, and surnames in NC

Hi all. I am new to the list (and chat rooms), but not new to Afrigeneas. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Erin Bradford and I have been working on a project for the past almost 6 years on identifying and documenting free African Americans in antebellum NC. Eventually, I plan to publish my findings, but in the meantime I have a lot of stuff scattered on the internet. I have quite a few of my own websites and also volunteer at The pages are transcripts of the actual document (unless otherwise noted), not just abstracts. I also have a couple articles online as well. Below is a list of the pages and their titles.

Documents: -Deed of Gibbea Chavers [Chavis] 1777 -Deed of Lawrence Pettiford to Reuben Bass, 1768 (both free Black men) -Deed of Lewis Petteyford [Pettiford] to James Yancy, 1768 [Lewis was a free Black man] -Estate Inventory of George Anderson, 1758 -Sheriff's Notice to George Anderson [no date] -Loose Estate Records of Benjamin Bass [no date] -Petition from the Inhabitants of Granville Co. regarding a law about Tythables, 1771 -Newspaper article about the hanging of Albert Taborn, 1887 [Albert was a descendant of a FPOC family during the antebellum period] -1781 Tax List of Wake County [includes FPOC from the Bass and Evans families] -1789 Insolvents Tax List of Wake County [includes FPOC from the Pettiford, Hicks, and Harris families] -Abstracts of Warren County Court Records, 1809-1833 [this is probably the only abstract page I have done, almost all if not all are FPOC]

Articles: -Finding and Using Apprenticeship Records in North Carolina [very important for researching FPOC in NC] -Free African Americans in Antebellum NC (this is a transcript of a talk I gave on the subject) -Free African Americans in Antebellum North Carolina (this is an article about the laws regulating the lifes of FPOC in antebellum period of NC)

Everything will be made available from my main page at by clicking on the list of articles (coming very shortly) or going to the various counties. I am constantly adding new documents. I have copies of over 700 documents on FPOC in NC during the antebellum period and I plan to put verbatim transcripts on my site.

Also, I wanted to give a list of the main surnames I'm searching for in NC. Please note that I'm searching for ALL free African Americans in NC during the antebellum period, but these are the ones I'm actively researching now:

Anderson, Artis, Bass, Beebee, Bibby, Boon, Chavis, Day, Dempsey, Driggers, Epps, Evans, Flood, Fortune, Garnes, Gibson, Goin(gs), Gowen, Hackett, Hagins, Harris, Hawkins, Hawley, Hedgepeth, Hicks, Ivey, Locus, Lucas, Lynch, McCollum, Magee, Mayo, Melton, Milton, Mitchell, Montford, Mumford, Pettiford, Pitman, Silver, Snelling, Stewart, Tabo(u)rn(e), Tyner, Underwood, Valentine.
