Bookers, Washingtons, and Brown

When I first began researching my family, I said that I was told that my family had never been enslaved. Someone told me that was impossible. I think it's only impossible because we really don't know our history. I know my family has to begin before Kitty Booker Washington, or her son My (gf) Allan Edward Brown supposed to have been from Essex County, Virginia. Alfred Brown ( his father)was supposed to have been been from D.C. I have been trying everything I can think of.I found Kitty in the 1870 cenus. From what I understand, Alfred was not her husband, but I don't have a name. I have tried to find a name in the 1860 census, but as unsucessful. I can't find her before or after. The Masons, census, ssdi. I can't think of anything else. I have one child of my grandparents. She is 85 years old. I don't think she rememebers as much as she the thinks she does. Can anyone help?
