Re: Davis family of Davistown
In Response To: Re: Davis family of Davistown ()

Hi Denise
Actually, 150 years ago the family founded a small church that is now on the state and national register of historic places. It is called the Solomon Wesley United Methodist Church. In the small cemetary many members of the family are buried. Unfortunately the church has no records at all of its past, not even of the cemetary. If there is no head stone, there is no way of knowing who is buried there. The county historical society is hoping that in the spring I will map the cemetary and record the headstones that are there.

From what I am told, about 20 years ago the minister at that time deliberately destroyed the old records including the original bible, because he was sick of all the bubbub about the church and the families historical significance. Right after that someone even chissled out the corner stone and took the contents.

I have given the church a copy of its original deed and charter and they have a copy of the genealogy chart to date on their Sunday school wall. It covers about 11 feet from end to end. (It's a BIG family.) They put the chart up so that people who might know someone who is listed there could get in contact with me.
Viola
