In Response To: Re: Sarah (Hammond) Roberts 1822-1876 ()
Most the names you mention ring a bell. Specifically the Roberts that settled Hamilton county, IN area mid 1830's(Roberts Settlement which included the Newsomes, Loclears, Revels Sweats, Iverys, Gilliams and others). In my serach to find Charles Hammond- I have come across several Have items on the web in regards to the FPOC Hammonds & Locklears, along with the Lowerys of Robeson county, NC (Saddletree swamp area). Chavis I am familar with as I run across the name very frequently doing research on my Banks/Hammond/White/Burdine family lines- which is my grandmothers side-just a matter of time before a Chavis pops up on this tree:) Interesting enough though I also have Chavis's from North Carolina in my tree on my grandfathers side (James C Chavis born 1873 NC died in Ohio-- his son was Charlie born 1894 in Mt. Airy NC). I was once told by the author Coy D. Robbins who has written extensively on Af Am settlers of Indiana that he had a lot of Hammond info in his book on Orange county, In. I dont have that book- however it may be helpful in your search. Its called "Forgotten Hoosiers: African Heritage in Orange County, Indiana", Roy D. Robbins. While I dont have the above book, I do have a book Mr. Robbins wrote in regards to the settling of Salem, IN by Af Am's pre 1850. Did a quick look up in the index and the following names appear: * Revels family of Hamilton County
Roberts Family in Orange Co, IN
Roberts in Salem, IN (Washington County) Pre 1820-1850
If any of the above are familiar to you and you want a look up just shoot me an email and I will do a more extensive look up for you. Thanks!
