History News Network to Run Article
History News Network will run an article I wrote titled, Soldiers of Color Left Out of 225th Anniversary Celebration. The article is scheduled to run beginnning, October 11, 2005. It is about the 225th Anniversary of The Siege of Yorktown, and the Soldiers of Color, whose names have been left off of the record. In 1999, I sent a copy of the official roster listing the names of Soldiers who fought from Amherst County Virginia. In the list was the name of my direct ancestor, Rawley Pinn, and other ancestors, John Redcross, Benjamin Evans, and Ambraham Cooper. Also listed were the surnames of Higginbotham, who are ancestors to now deceased, Judge Leon Higginbotham.
On September 30, 2000 a ceremony was held to honor those People of Color, and I was instruemental in planning the ceremony. After that event I believed that the names of the soldiers would be added to the database, but this did not happen. I learned about the anniversary on the Virginia History Website, even though one of the historians contacted me several weeks ago. He was requesting a copy of the roster, to add to the database, yet failed to mention they were planning a celebration.
I am grateful to Rick Shenkman, the editor of History News Network for running my article. It is the year 2005 and we still have to pull teeth in order to get the record right.
Check out the article it is quite informative!!
