AfriGeneas Free Persons of Color Forum
Response From Family Chronicle Magazine
I found this response to my query for an article interesting. This magazine was listed as a leading Genealogy Magazine, yet the editor is stating that she has written enough about Free Persons of Color. I thought genealogy was about documenting all lines of your family history. Well, that is what it would be in its' purest form.
I just want to share with everyone some of the prejudice responses I get to my queries. Most of the articles I write, or interviews I sit for are for free. This is not about money, it is about having equal access. Even after my book is selling well, and I appear on Book TV, this is a typical response. This is what I call the white washing of American History. The only place some folks are comfortable with us showing up is as slaves. This is why it is so important for us to write and publish all of our histories. I am proud of my ancestors, especially those who are Native and African. They endured, and because of them I exist.
Below is a copy of the response I recived from Family Chronicle Magazine, which also publishes The History Magazine. I did not request a book review, just an article about my search.
Interviews about books and/or with authors is not something we do in
