I have spent the past seven years trying to find my grandmother, Mertise Powell to no end. I recently found out some interesting and rewarding information:
Henry and Amelia Montgomery Powell had
1. Lemon Powell
2. Frank Powell
3. George Powell
4. Henry Powell
5. Hager Powell
Lemon Powell married Rosetta Jones who lived a few doors from them in 1900 (Arkansas census, Phillips County).
They are found in 1910 married and with children
1. Cleopa (? spelling) (3)
2. Mapple (2)
This Mapple would have been born around 1908. She is also listed a few families above on the same page with her grandparents Duncan Montgomery.
Later in the same census Rosetta is listed with her mother as a widow but with only Cleopa as a child.
Frank married a Violet and they are listed in 1910 with two sons.
I have the WWI Draft Registration cards of both Lemon and Frank dated 1918 and both state that they are married, have families and live in Onedia , Arkansas (still Phillps County). But neither of these Powells are listed, nor are their wives in the 1920 census. I have done individual searches for all the children, wives and anything I can find but these Powells are not there.
The only Powell that is remotely near is Mattie B found in the home of Rosetta's brother as his niece. I know this is the same "Mapple" because Rosetta's mother Zilpha is living in the home.
Then in 1930, Rosetta is found in Monroe County with Jim Banks as her husband and Lemon Jr and 2 daughters but Mattie/Mapple isn't there. Frank and Violet are listed in Phillips County with their children and are living a few doors from Eugene and "Myrtllee" Oliver (my grandparents). There is a Lemon living in St Francis County with a different wife and children. Whew!
What happened to the Powells between 1918 and 1920? Should I believe (as much as I want to ) that this Mapple, Mattie B and Myrtllee are the same person and therefore my grandmother? By the way her name on the death record is "Merdie".
Can anyone give me any other advice on this situation.
