Renae, you may (emphasis on may) be able to find an earlier deed. The land may have been sold/given to him without a piece of paper passing from hand to hand until 1872, but exhaust all avenues before coming to any conclusion. Also remember that just because you don't find the evidence does not mean an event did not occur. It only means you can't prove it to others.
