Re: FN registers, Caroline County VA
In Response To: Re: FN registers, Caroline County VA ()
The LVA does not list a Free Negro REgister for Caroline County as part of their records, so you might want to call the clerk and see if one still exists in the County. You might also want to check the County Court Order books, available on microfilm and see what information is listed there, many counties kept records on Free Blacks in the Order Books. There does exist a census of the Black population taken in 1865 under the direction of the Freedmen's Bureau. They are part of Record Group 105, orignial is located at the National ARchives in DC, they are part of the series of records that are being filmed. Not sure if available yet. I did transcribe this record. It is kinda like a Co-hab List and census combined. Unfortunately it does not list name of last owner, as many do. There are Johnson's, Rollings, 1 Pitts and 1 Murry listed: Ormstead Scott age 37 born Stafford
Ben Hamilton age 44 born King George
No children (together)
Number of Johnsons and Rollins were you looking for anyone in particular. Selma For the other researcher I didn't see the MONT surname listed but there were 4 MONTAGUE: Betty, Garret, Matilda and Randal. Selma
