On the earlier question of "naturalized voter" used in NYS censuses, 1855-65, to categorize some, but not all, FPOC who met property requirements, but who had been born in the US: A colleague suggested that it might signify father born outside of the US, reminding me that not until the Reconstruction Era Amendments did birth on US soil automatically bring US citizenship. I do see in the 1850 US Census quite a number of black/mulatto individuals who indicated birth in Africa, West Indies. Not all of these individuals elderly.
