Williams, Chester County PA FPOC
With the help of a new-found online cousin, am back working on the William's family line from Chester PA - East Nantmeal, Pughtown, and Coatesville. Anyone who thinks they have a connection with this family please let me know.
Thought I'd look at significant dates in history in regards to PA first:
excerpted from CHRONOLOGY OF SLAVERYŠ
1780 Pennsylvania enacted a gradual emancipation act providing that no child born in Pennsylvania after March 1, 1780 should be a slave.
Chester PA was a major stop in the underground railroad, but probably too close to bordering slave states for fugitives to settle in comfortably.
The family I'm tracing has PA roots back to 1810 - haven't gotten back further yet.
Have found Richard WILLIAMS Sr. with adults and children listed in 1840 census (no names in 1840), and Fanny WILLIAMS (no maiden name known)as a 80 year old widow (born PA) living with son Richard 48 and wife Jane 32 in 1860.
Richard Jr. and Jane have one son Thomas age 11 months. Living with them also is Richard's sister Leticia Williams, age 32.
By 1880 there are lots of children:
Richard WILLIAMS Self M M B 54 PENNA
There is a son born in 1881
Am now searching early marriage records in Chester to see if I can get a maiden name for Fanny Williams, and one for daughter-in-law Jane, and am hoping to find obits which might give me more info.
