Have you searched for manumission (freedom) papers in Halifax or surrounding counties for your ancestors?

Also, you might check the Census records prior to 1850's for determination of the 'white' family structure. Were slaves included? Have you looked at the slave schedules for the county in question?

The slave schedules, even though names are not usually given, sex and age of slaves, can sometimes be of help in verifying slave family groupings in later Census records
