Hello All, I am stuck. I am researching the Baker & Underdue families of Halifax/Northampton NC area. My paternal grandmother told me long ago that our side of the family were Free Colored before the civil war.I have researched back to the 1850 census that proves this, but I am stuck there. I have done everything I can think of to further research my families name but I can't verify a link from before that point. The only thing I can think of would be to visit The Halifax County NC courthouse, but I live to far away.I noticed there is a white Baker family that lived several house numbers away from my free colored family. I suspect the white Baker family could be a link since that family is in the 1840 and 1830 census, but my free colored Baker family is not in those census years. Does anyone have any suggestions.
