CivWar Sailors-MORDECAI

Civil War Veteran, Austin MORDECAI.

>Listed on the Roster of the U.S.S. Miami is:

MORDECAI, Austin - 1st Class Boy - Black

You will also find many other Black Sailors on the same Roster.

You can find this at: http://home.att.net/~cwppds/miami.htm

I recommend you go there, as you will find a photo of the entire crew, with a carveout photo of some of the Black Sailors.

>A letter was written to the New York Herald of Wednesday, Feb 12, 1862 by an officer from the USS Miami. You can find that at: http://home.coffeeonline.com.au/~tfoen/sailorsletters.htm

>The USS Miami was a 730 ton "double-ender" side-whell gunboat, built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, PA, Commissioned on 29 Jan 1862. You can read more about her at: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh/m/miami.htm.

Even if you don't think you had a civil war sailor in the family, it's worth checking into. I never would have thought we had one, either.
