Re: Sussex County, Virginia
In Response To: Re: Sussex County, Virginia ()

I am working on a book on African American history in Petersburg, Richmond, Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Norfolk and Williamsburg, ca 1760 to 1810. Only Petersburg and Fredericksburg have a register--Fredericksburg's is actually a compilation based on the certificates rather than a book-- that falls within this time period. I am, in the case of Petersburg, attempting to find out everything I can about the free people of color who make Petersburg the place with the highest proportions of free blacks before 1810. So, I am trying to reconstruct what information I can working backwards from the Petersburg Register into other existing registers and county records. I hope to actually produce an annotated version of the Petersburg Register. Several individuals move there from Sussex and Iwould like to glean the information from the Sussex register about them. I have also noticed some differences among the various registers and would like to see the whole Sussex register to see where it fits in the group. If I could obtain a transcription of the whole, I would really appreciate it and would be more than happy to pay for copying and mailing. Best Regards, Mick Nicholls
