Researching WILLIAMS family from TN

Am researching Mattie RANDEL(nee WILLIAMS), whom I suspect to be my maternal ggrandmother, born TX ca1862. Mattie lists her mother as having been born in TN. My family is tri-racial and I'm struggling to research the Native American ancestors. Mattie is listed as 'MU' on the 1880 census, Smith County, TX. I'm in need of feedback as to how to proceed with researching Williams from TN. Should I isolate all female 'MU' Williams? I'm not sure of Mattie's mother's first name (maybe Julie Ann or Amanda)and the 1880 census does not list her father's place of birth. I'm familiar with how NAs were categorized, race-wise, during the time-frame that I'm researching. Any suggestions or feedback will be greatly appreciated.
