I would have to assume they were slaves.

a. I did not find them on the free schedule for 1860.
b. You might check the slave schedule for 1860 in that county for a Thompson slave owner, assuming they were slaves who assumed their owner's name. If such a slave owing family is found your search should then turn to probate records, land records, etc.
