The North Carolina Archives sells a paperback book (I don't remember the price but it was very reasonable) "Guide to Research Materials in the North Carolina State Archives, Section B: County Records" which lists all their county holdings and identifies which are on microfilm. If you can identify which reel or reels you need to research, it is often easier to purchase the film from the Archives than to visit. The price is $12 each and that includes postage.
