my paternal great grandmother, caroline castor (caston?) pierre, was a 'free woman of color.' she was born about 1859.i believe she may have been born in mississippi, but i do not know where. she lived in thibodaux, la (la fourche parish) with her husband, felix pierre. their daughter, louisa pierre, married my grandfather, john everett ward, and they are the parents of my late father, the playwright theodore ward.
