Re: your question about manumission by Quakers and the Black Codes bond-posting requirement, I've read that in some states like Michigan, the bond requirement was ignored on a county-by-county basis but it wasn't necessarily due to any religious affiliation. In Michigan, the bond requirement was apparently enforced more stringently in Wayne Co. (home of Detroit and the highest concentration of free blacks) than in some of the outlying, more rural counties with a smaller concentration of free blacks. I'm new to Ohio research but I assume similar patterns may exist. Good luck, Janice
