() Thanks for posting this link. The man listed as "Richard Strage," a free person of color in Winchester (1836) probably is RICHARD STRANGE, a son of REUBEN STRANGE who was freed by Edward McGuire in 1817. They apparently are related to my ancestor Hannah Strange Berry Wise who was born in northern Virginia and died in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. I believe that Reuben Strange and/or his son Reuben Strange Jr. moved from Winchester, Virginia to Warren County, Ohio, before the Civil War. At least three members of the African-American Strange family in Ohio enlisted in the Union army and/or navy during the Civil War: Reuben (or Ruben), George F., and William E. For more information on African-American Strange family in Ohio, see Warren County OH GenWeb Project.
